Cambridge Analytics also is known as CA is data mining, data brokerage and data analysis with strategic communication for the electoral process. They are known for supporting political campaigns worldwide. The company is currently a part of an ongoing criminal investigation for using personal data of 50 million Facebook users for hampering the electoral process in many countries. This has reduced people’s usage of social media platform like Facebook. Cambridge analytica allegedly used illegally obtained data of 50 million Facebook users to influence political outcomes.
On March 17th, the New York Times revealed that the company has used the acquired data of Facebook users for swinging voters in the political campaign and even hampering the presidential elections of Donal Trump.
The data analytics company gathered information in 2014 with the help of an app called “Thisisyourdigitallife” which was created by Russian American at Cambridge University. 270,000 people agreed to share their personal information for research purposes at a very minimal cost. Cambridge analytica paid $80000 to cover the cost of the app

Effects on Facebook:

After the report by New York Times, people started to get angry on Facebook and hashtag like #deletefacebook begin to trend on the competing social media platforms like Twitter and Google+. Even though Facebook denied that there was any data breach and people shared their information willingly. Facebook even says that no sensitive information or passwords were stolen or hacked.
In the process of data harvest by the company Cambridge analytica, this social media platform allowed collection of data of the user and their friends under the permission of the user of the app.
Facebook has taken drastic measures to protect the personal information of their users by denying the collection of personal information from any app. Facebook announced many changes to gain their consumer’s trust back by bringing changes like developers will have limited access to the information of the users. Developers can no longer ask to see user’s religion and political views. Facebook will bar access on the user’s list of events. To access the data of groups, app developers will have to ask permission from users as well as Facebook. Facebook will only allow limited access to the pages.
Facebook has a past of such controversies for a long time, this is the wakeup call for Facebook to bring in the change and gain the trust back of the users. This is the perfect time to bring n major updates to protect user’s data and preventing any further controversies.
